DOCUMENTARY:  PERSONAL STATEMENT

This Emmy-nominated feature-length documentary that follows three students as they navigate the labyrinthian college admissions process their senior year and into college.

College access is barrier that many of our citizens are struggling to overcome. The film producer of the documentary notes: “Teenagers the United States want all that a higher education promises: the possibility of prospering, moving beyond the survival mode that is all they have ever known, and participating in the American Dream. But many of them can’t get there, and as a result, income inequality persists.”

Through this film and the discussion, participants will gain a better understanding of the challenges behind college access and the ramifications of inaccessibility. We will also explore the national trends in addressing this and consider what Virginia’s Community Colleges can do to improve access for our students.

Accessing media resources, including this film, free of charge for use in classrooms and campus events will be discussed.

DOCUMENTARY:  ALL THE DIFFERENCE

This intimate film follows two young men from the South Side of Chicago on their pursuit of their dream of becoming college graduates. The largely invisible and often crushing struggles of these young men come vividly -- and heroically -- to life.

What does make all the difference in whether a student succeeds in reaching their dreams? Do students with seemingly impossible dreams sit in your classroom or office? What role can you play in their success? Come explore these ideas and consider the implications of success and failure faced by many of our students.

Accessing media resources, including this film, free of charge for use in classrooms and campus events will be discussed.
