Event Description and Takeaways:
Quantitative literacy is one of the VCCS General Education competencies and is therefore of widespread interest. This seminar will explore and discuss the role of quantitative literacy in the overall success of student learning. Students are constantly faced with an avalanche of data to process in order to be academically success in college. Course syllabi requirements, effective studying, and time management are just a few areas that can overwhelm students as they attempt to manage the quantity of information they face. Through presentation, conversation and sharing, this seminar will examine the many facets of quantitative literacy that impact student success both inside and outside of the classroom. Converting relevant information into quantitative forms for problem solving and making judgments based on data are examples of ways we can help students.

Presenters:

Vadim Matyushin holds a degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Systems. He has been a faculty member at MECC since 2011 where he teaches mathematics and computer literacy. Vadim’s engaging and upbeat personality helps reduce math anxiety for many of our students. Additionally, he provides college leadership in quantitative reasoning and developmental mathematics.

Jessica Ketron, M.A., serves as the TRIO Director at MECC for Student Support Services and Educational Talent Search. She matriculated at MECC for her Associate’s, UVA Wise for her bachelor’s in psychology, and ETSU for her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Target Audience:
Faculty participants are encouraged to attend from all disciplines and should come prepared to share as well as learn. Participants who provide academic support for learning have much insight into how students process course information and are invited to also come prepared to share and learn.
